I started a\nsmall company called \u201cPerformax\u201d in 1989 and I invented my own job title:\nperformance consultant. Mainly because that was the world I lived in: creating\nchampions or at least assisting athletes to become champions at the highest\nlevel. It was rare profession at that\ntime, there were only coaches and support staff in sports, not too many people\ntried to cover the broad scope of performance, but I thought my task was\nbroader than coaching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But look around\nnow, less than 30 years down the road, there is hardly a coach, or fitness\ninstructor, who isn\u2019t a \u201chigh-performance expert\u201d. Everybody has become an \u201cexpert\u201d,\na \u201cmaster\u201d or a \u201cspecialist\u2019. So where\nare all those low-performance specialists, since low performers are the\nmajority of athletes, like the basis of a pyramid, high-performers are only a\nhandful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We see a\nstrong dilution of the expression \u201chigh-performance\u201d. Talking to these guys,\nthey are the \u201cspeed specialist\u201d, while their fastest guy barely breaks the 11\nseconds barrier\u2026 high performance\u2026.. where? They work with elite-teams, even if\nthese are only competing in the 8th<\/sup> division. Many \u201cstrength and\nconditioning specialists\u201d are just average fitness-instructors who have never coached\na high-performance athlete or contributed significantly to high-performances or\nexperienced the world of high-performance hands-on for a longer period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now I don\u2019t\nblame them, the world of social media, self-branding, self-marketing, and inflated\nego\u2019s demands people selling themselves\nas being much bigger than they really are, to stand out, and to be unique in a\ncompetitive field. Unfortunately this bears no resemblance to their really\nqualities. They try to impress me with their limitless knowledge (reading the\nStrength and Conditioning Journal being their main source of information) and\ndropping the names of the elite-athletes they worked with, even if they only\nhave met them for 10 minutes in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can\nbelieve whatever you want but I always tend to look at the performances of the\nathletes a person coached instead of falling for sharp-sounding job titles or\nexaggerated curriculums.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I started a small company called \u201cPerformax\u201d in 1989 and I invented my own job title: performance consultant.
